How to Use the ZIPPO Hand Warmer

ZIPPO Hand Warmer

Here is a guide on how to use the ZIPPO Hand Warmer and important precautions to keep in mind.

The ZIPPO Hand Warmer generates heat by using platinum-catalyzed fiberglass in the burner unit. As a result, it can become hotter than standard disposable hand warmers.

Designed for functionality, this hand warmer is built to withstand even the harsh winters of North America. Like ZIPPO lighters, it requires ZIPPO premium lighter fluid.

Since fuel is added directly to the unit, it is not a disposable product. Once filled, it provides warmth for approximately 6 to 12 hours, depending on the amount of fuel used.

While this hand warmer is a reliable companion for cold winters, please use it with caution, as it operates differently from disposable warmers due to its use of lighter fluid.

How to Use the ZIPPO Hand Warmer

(1) Removing the Lid and Burner Unit

Remove the hand warmer lid (the cap covering the upper half of the device). Inside, you will find the burner unit (the part with fiberglass). Detach the burner unit as well. It may be tightly secured, so if it’s difficult to remove, gently wiggle it from side to side.

(2) Measuring and Pouring the Lighter Fluid

Use the included measuring cup to pour the recommended amount of fluid. The cup has measurement markings:

  • Filling up to the 1/2 mark provides about 6 hours of warmth.
  • Filling up to the 1 mark provides about 12 hours of warmth.
These times may vary depending on usage conditions, so use them as a rough estimate. Do not exceed the maximum capacity of the measuring cup.

(3) Filling the Hand Warmer

After removing the burner unit, you will see three square openings in the main body, with cotton inside. Slowly pour the lighter fluid onto the cotton, allowing it to absorb the liquid, just like fueling a Zippo lighter.

(4) Checking for Leaks

Make sure there are no fluid leaks. If any excess fluid has spilled, wipe it off completely. If fluid remains on the exterior, it may ignite during use.

(5) Reattaching the Burner Unit

Place the burner unit back into its original position and ensure it is securely attached.

(6) Igniting the Hand Warmer

Use a lighter to heat the burner unit. Hold the flame close to the fiberglass section, as if trying to ignite it. Over time, the fiberglass will begin to glow red as it heats up.

The instruction manual recommends heating for 3 to 5 seconds, but the required time may vary. If the heat source is not properly established, the hand warmer will not function.

Some users may mistake a lack of warmth for a malfunction when, in reality, the burner unit was not sufficiently heated. If you’re using it for the first time, it may take a little practice to get it right.

Determining the right heating time can be tricky at first. Try heating the unit in 5-second intervals, repeating as needed until you confirm the heat source is active.

(7) Securing the Lid and Placing in the Warming Bag

Once you visually confirm that parts of the burner unit have turned red, indicating the heat source is established, securely attach the lid back onto the hand warmer. Ensure it is firmly in place.

Since the hand warmer becomes extremely hot, immediately place it inside the included warming bag (a black pouch). Do not hold the heated device with bare hands, as it may cause burns. The pouch also helps regulate the temperature. The warming bag is made of fleece and has a soft texture.

(8) Duration and Safety Precautions

The hand warmer will stay warm for approximately 6 to 12 hours, depending on the amount of fluid used. It cannot be turned off manually.

If you need to stop using it before the fluid runs out, place the hand warmer (inside the pouch) on a heat-resistant, non-flammable surface and allow it to cool down naturally.

Do not attempt to remove the lid or burner unit while the device is still hot. This can lead to burns or fire hazards.

Replacing the ZIPPO Hand Warmer Burner Unit

The burner unit needs to be replaced approximately every 70 to 80 uses (as recommended by the manufacturer). However, depending on the usage environment, replacement may be necessary sooner than the specified number of uses.

If you notice a shorter or unstable heating duration, it is recommended to replace the burner unit. Replacement burner units are sold separately.

How to Replace the Burner Unit

Simply remove the old burner unit and attach the new one. For instructions on how to remove the burner unit, please refer to the How to Use the ZIPPO Hand Warmer section above.

Over time, the burner unit may become blackened due to soot, but this is not a malfunction. Wiping it lightly can help clean the surface, except for the catalyst portion. Discoloration alone is not a sign that replacement is needed—check the heating performance and stability to determine when a replacement is necessary.

Usage Precautions and Additional Information

  • The ZIPPO Hand Warmer is designed for extreme winter outdoor use and may feel very hot during general use. It can be held in your hand while inside the included warming bag (black pouch), but please be aware that it can become extremely hot.

  • The ZIPPO Hand Warmer can get hotter than standard disposable hand warmers. Never hold the main body with bare hands. Always use the included warming bag, and if it still feels too hot, wrap it in an additional towel or cloth.

  • Prolonged use may cause low-temperature burns. Unlike standard disposable hand warmers, it is not recommended for use by children or the elderly.

  • In case of malfunction, oil leakage, or fire, first take the necessary fire-extinguishing measures, then place the hand warmer in a safe, non-flammable area and wait for any remaining fire or heat to dissipate. The warming bag (black pouch) does not have fire-extinguishing properties.

  • Use only ZIPPO-branded lighter fluid (sold separately). Other fluids may not function properly, and any malfunctions caused by non-ZIPPO fuel are not covered under warranty.

  • The product comes with a 2-year warranty from the date of purchase (not covered under ZIPPO’s lifetime guarantee). The burner unit (fiberglass part) is a consumable item and should be replaced as needed. Depending on usage conditions, replacement may be required sooner than the manufacturer’s recommended lifespan.

  • When heating the burner unit with a lighter, keep the fuel can away from the area, ensure proper ventilation, remove flammable objects nearby, and be cautious to prevent clothing from catching fire.
